We eventually came across some old fumarole fields that gave the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes its name. The Valley is a large area of pyroclastic surge and flow deposits from the 1912 cataclysmic eruption of Mt. Katmai and Novarupta, the largest eruption in the world during the 20th Century.
