In the afternoon we all headed down to the coast along the Chain of Craters Road in Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park. We were going to hike to the active lava flows to see the real thing in action. They were still about 2 or so kilometers from the sea, but most of the stuff we were hiking on was previous pahoehoe lava flows. Here's a little shot of Sally Kuhn and Jessica Bluth who were attending the workshop from the University of Pittsburgh.
