The final leg of the trip this day was from Honolulu to Hilo, Hawai'i on the Big Island. On the way there was a cool view of the Maui golf courses. I'm pretty sure they were the professional courses. Once in Hilo I waited for the next day to arrive for the start of the National Science Foundation sponsored Student Workshop in association with the IAVCEI Cities on Volcanoes 3 Conference. On July 7th, the first day of the workshop started out with meeting the three instructors from the University of Hawai'i, Bruce Houghton, Andy Harris, and Chris Gregg. After all the introductions and dividing up into vans we all left the airport for the field sites for that day. The stops for this day dealt with explosive volcanism examples. We focused primarily on the explosive deposits from one of the caldera forming eruptions from Kilauea. Bruce Houghton led this part of the workshop for the first two days. It was somewhat drizzly that day, so not many photos were taken.
