P1012878 A week before the 145th Anniversary of the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee, Kate and I headed down to tour the battlefield and a couple other sites in the area in late March 2007. We stayed in Corinth, Mississippi since there was no closer hotels available. We saw several sites that are discussed in Jeff Shaara's book: P1012878

P1012884 After checking out the information at the vistor center, we headed over to the National Cemetery at Shiloh. P1012884
P1012885 One of the first things you see as you enter these hallowed grounds is the Gettysburg Address by Abraham Lincoln. A sentence in the middle of the address, P1012885
P1012887 A total listing of those buried in the National Cemetery as of March 1869. Of particular note are the burials of one man each from Alabama and Louisiana (Confederate States Army). These two were prisoners who happened to have been buried along side the Union dead. There are very few exceptions where individual Confederate soldiers have been buried in a National Cemetery, if this is not the only case. Most Confederate burials are usually in mass graves on the battlefields, or in local cemeteries nearby. P1012887
P1012896 A very honored place to see in the National Cemetery is noted in Shaara's book. Where this 24 pound Dahlgren boat howitzer points out toward the Tennessee River to the east, there are these six graves. All six of these men where color bearers of the 16th Wisconsin Regiment. All of them died carrying their flag into battle, and only their flag - no rifle! P1012896

P1012903 Nearby, the road leads down to Pittsburg Landing along the Tennessee River. Back during the time of the battle (mainly the second day), and after the battle, this shoreline was lined up with steamers and Navy gunboats. P1012903

P1012908 After leaving the National Cemetery, Kate and I walked a short distance to the south to the cannon of Grant's line of defense at the beginning of the second day of the battle. The Confederates were advancing from the left of the photo, but were met with fierce cannon fire. P1012908
P1012911 We then took of driving the park roads of the battlefield. Our first stop of the drive was to the Confederate Monument. P1012911
P1012917 Next, was the stop at the Sunken Road. Kate and I took the walk along the Sunken Road from the Corinth-Pittsburg Landing Road east toward the Hamburg-Savannah Road. This P1012917

P1012925 At the beginning of the walk along the Sunken Road, one can see the line of cannon at the treeline to the southwest. This is where the Confederates concentrated about 62 cannon of Ruggle's Battery on the Hornet's Nest. P1012925
P1012939 At the eastern end of the Sunken Road is the cabin of W. Manse George. This is also the location of the... P1012939
P1012941 ...peach orchard. Though these young peach trees were not around at the time of the battle, their ancestors were in this exact position for some of the heaviest fighting. The petals of the flowers on the trees were being shreaded so fast that one observer made note that it appeared to be snowing. P1012941
P1012946 Just to the north of the peach orchard is the Bloody Pond. P1012946
P1012949 The Bloody Pond is actually fed by an underground spring that keeps it filled even though it is the highest point in the county. The depth is around three feet. It was said to have turned blood red from all the blood from the wounded and other dead soldiers that were brought here for drinking water. P1012949

P1012952 We walked a short distance down the road to the Confederate artillery line that decimated the Union line at the Hornet's Nest late on the first day of battle. P1012952

P1012963 Though we passed it on the way into the park in the early morning, we went back to the Park entrance sign after lunch. We ate at Ed Shaw's Restaurant at the corner of Tennessee State Routes 22 and 142. This was mentioned in Shaara's book as being near... P1012963
P1012964 ...Wood's Field. When walking northeast from the road, you are walking the direction the Confederate troops did that early April morning on the 6th. Union forces were surprised by the advancing Confederates at Fraley's Field (small open space in the trees in the distance) which is on the northeastern end of Wood's Field. This was the main beginning of the Battle of Shiloh. P1012964
P1012966 We drove back into the park after lunch to pay our respects to the Confederate dead in a couple of the 5 known burial trenches located around the Shiloh battlefield. This is the trench marker for one of them located on the eastern loop road of Corinth-Pittsburg Landing Road. P1012966

P1012971 Just to the southwest of the previous burial trench and northwest of Water Oaks Pond is the largest of the known Confederate Burial trenches. Roughly 700 bodies are buried here. Also on this spot is the flag of the Confederacy flying high above. P1012971

P1012974 A kind gentleman was at this burial trench taking a break from some work being done at the battlefield. He was a southerner who also did a lot of re-enacting of Civil War battles. He was very kind enough to tell Kate and I that these two grave markers, in front of the main trench marker, are the graves of the last two known Confederate burials on the battlefield. They were buried recently, but the date slipped my mind since we talked with the gentleman. P1012974
P1012977 Kate and I walked on to the southeast a short distance from the burial trench to see Water Oaks Pond. This is the location where one of the newest, and final, state monuments is located... P1012977
