cov01P7060626MtRainierPlane03 My second trip of the 2003 summer started bright and early on July 6th with a very early morning flight from Fairbanks to Seattle. The next part was from Seattle to Los Angeles. This leg of the trip was awesome, because I was on the starboard (right) side of the plane at the window. The entire way to LA was very clear providing great views of the Cascade Range volcanoes! The first one seen was Mt. Rainier right after takeoff. In the photo Mt. cov17P7060709Maui02 The final leg of the trip this day was from Honolulu to Hilo, Hawai'i on the Big Island. On the way there was a cool view of the Maui golf courses. I'm pretty sure they were the professional courses. Once in Hilo I waited for the next day to arrive for the start of the National Science Foundation sponsored Student Workshop in association with the IAVCEI Cities on Volcanoes 3 Conference. On July 7th, the first day of the workshop started out with meeting the three instructors from the University of Hawai'i, Bruce Houghton, Andy Harris, and Chris Gregg. After all the introductions and dividing up into vans we all left the airport for the field sites for that day. The stops for this day dealt with explosive volcanism examples. We focused primarily on the explosive deposits from one of the caldera forming eruptions from Kilauea. Bruce Houghton led this part of the workshop for the first two days. It was somewhat drizzly that day, so not many photos were taken. cov17P7060709Maui02

We also checked out the source vent of the eruption and investigated what happened to a couple of rafted sections that are now in the area of the lava lake. We also stopped by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory that sits on the outer rim of Kilauea's caldera. cov20P7161467

cov22P7090898 In the afternoon we all headed down to the coast along the Chain of Craters Road in Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park. We were going to hike to the active lava flows to see the real thing in action. They were still about 2 or so kilometers from the sea, but most of the stuff we were hiking on was previous pahoehoe lava flows.
